question…if house is built and I have termites, drywood, since interior walls are framed, how do you get this boron on the inside of interior walls where the wood is?
Dear Ann,
In the past, drywood termites have been treated with Methyl Bromide fumigant which was discontinued after it was found to be adversely affecting the ozone layer causing ozone depletion. The current methodology is a Sulfuryl Fluoride fumigant that requires vacation of the building whilst the tarpaulin covers the house and then the fumigant is applied to the affected building.
This is generally a reasonably expensive process that can cost somewhere between $30-$50 thousand dollars.
The treatment of the house leaves NO Residual and generally kills ALL drywood termite activity. However, because there is no residual, the structure can be re-infested at a later date and this may occur when other buildings nearby have undiscovered and/or untreated drywood termite infestations.
Generally, there is some destruction of structural timber where drywood termites have infested a building and it is generally necessary to do an invasive inspection with a borescope or remove some gyprock to determine the structural soundness of various structural timber elements therein.
Boron is able to be applied via a series of 8 mm holes that are centred between studs both above and below the noggins. These holes allow for the injection of a heated borate and sysnthetic pyrethroid treatment system that is applied to the timber via a foam/gel system and then migrates and infuses through the timber causing the drywood termites therein to either vacate the timber or die therein.
This treatment system continues to reside in the timbers so treated and will therefore prevent any further re-infestations by drywood termites or any other timber pest – subterranean termites, borers, etc.
The 8 mm holes are then utilised to absorb a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the walls and on completion, these holes are filled with plaster and it is not uncommon for homeowners to combine a treatment with painting of the internal walls on completion of the treatment thereby leaving no trace of the completed works.
The cost of the treatment, inclusive of having someone paint the interior of the home, is generally less that half the price of the Sulfuryl Fluoride fumigation option and, unlike the fumigation option, will provide ongoing protection that stops any future re-infestations and is warrantied accordingly.
The major requirement is to initially establish the degree of infestation and the damage that has occurred so that the structural integrity of all parts of the building can be fully assessed at an early juncture by an appropriately qualified person. Some invasive procedures are generally required to fully determine the damage and structural integrity of affected timbers.
I hope this provides a complete answer to your question.
If you require further information, please email me and I will provide further advice thereon.
Kindest Regards,
